Getting A Pasting – More About Teeth

Getting a pasting - more about teeth Getting A Pasting – More About Teeth

Once Travis had his full set of adult teeth, it was time to get him used to having them cleaned.

A recent survey by the Co-Operative Insurance company found that 40% of dog and cat owners claimed that dental problems were one of the top reasons for visiting the vet and it is estimated that 80% of adult dogs and 70% of adult cats have some form of oral disease.

It is likely that a large percentage of those visits could have been prevented. Just as with humans, good dental hygiene can save your dog (or cat) from discomfort and stress and you could save on vet bills.

Many people buy “dental chews” believing that they will automatically clean the teeth but, although they are better than nothing, they are no substitute for thorough cleaning. Man of them are very high in calories too. Do provide your dog with high quality chews for recreation though.

While your puppy has a shiny set of new teeth, you can accustom him gradually to having them cleaned, doing a little at a time until he gets used to it so that they will stay that way. You can use a finger stall if it is easier, and it does make it less likely that your puppy will chew the brush. Never use human toothpaste on dogs. Human toothpaste often contains fluoride, sodium lauryl sulphate (a foaming agent) and xylitol, all of which are toxic to dogs. Dog and cat toothpaste is designed to be palatable as well as effective – it was my first dog’s favourite treat! If your puppy is a little worried or over-excited by the brush, let him lick some toothpaste off your finger first or use your finger to rub some on the gumline.

Feeding a good quality diet will help to maintain good teeth and gum health; if you feed wet food, you may need to be especially vigilant in checking for oral problems. Some breeds of dog and cat can also be more prone to plaque build-up and gum disease as are older animals. Cleaning every day has been shown to be more effective than less frequently, but any brushing will help.

So, getting a pasting can be good for your dog and good for your bank balance!
