A first time for everything and everything for the first time

There's a first time for everything and everything is for the first time
         Puppy socialisation list

Everything in the world is for the first time for a puppy and there are so many important “firsts” to check off in the vital early weeks for owners too.

There is a lot of mis-understanding about puppy socialisation. Although it should involve meeting other dogs, it actually refers to the first three months of life when puppies are very influenced by new experiences. Frightening and negative things that are experienced during this period can be very difficult to erase in later life so puppies should be introduced carefully to new things i a positive way.

Puppies often come from semi-rural and rural environments, so it is important that they are habituated to the sounds and sights of a town or city if that is where they are going to live. Puppies should also be raised in a home environment so that they habituate to household noises and activities.

Although a dog’s personality may not emerge fully until adolescence, much can be moulded in the first 10-12 weeks, and it is important to build resilience, especially in smaller dogs that can have a genetic tendency to be nervous and dependent on people.

Although vaccination régimes mean that puppies are in quarantine for the first 11 weeks, much can be done to get them out and about safely before then. Checking off the “first time for everything” experiences can do much to help dogs cope for the rest of their lives. Everyone’s lifestyle is different, so priorities will vary, but it is also worth considering unlikely events so that you can be prepared in an emergency. If you drive, get your puppy used to public transport and vice versa for instance, and it’s never too early to get your puppy used to a café – or pub! Go slowly and carefully, though so as not to overwhelm.
